Are you guilty of ruining travel for your fellow passengers? Not just other people, you could also be your own worst travel-enemy! Of course, there’s no such thing as perfection, but there’s always a way to do things better. (Why complicate life!)
When you spend plenty of time in the air, you’ll be witnessing (or making) certain annoying mistakes over and over again. This can only turn travel into a nightmare for yourself and others.
1. YOU FAIL TO PREP FOR SECURITY
When it’s finally your turn at the long security line, there is no logic to making things harder for other people and yourself. It’s much easier to get ready in advance and keep things nice and smooth.
All you need to do is put away everything except your boarding pass and ID. I repeat, everything! Don’t forget to take off your watch and belt, get rid of that water bottle, unlace your shoes, store away your phone, empty your pockets, etc.
It’s best to take care of these things before you reach the front of the security line to avoid wasting everyone’s time (including yours.)
2. YOU DON’T FOLLOW THE BOARDING OR DEBOARDING PROCESS
According to a Hipmunk study to unveil naughty travelers, 6% of passengers sneak on the plane before their group is called. This behavior causes crowding and distress for every flier involved.
As for deboarding, common sense has it that passengers get off the plane from front to back, one row at a time. (Smooth and fair!) But when some people decide to do things otherwise, they simply slow down and confuse everyone else behind and around them.
You have no excuse not to board and deboard politely; we’ve all learned how to enter and exit a room in the elementary school, remember?
3. CROWDING THE BAGGAGE CLAIM
Why would anyone create an unnecessary confusion while waiting to get their luggage off the belt? I mean, every single passenger wants to leave the airport ASAP, but since we can see our bags coming out, it’s too easy to know when you should move forward to get yours without having to block traffic and piss everyone off.
4. YOU SLAM YOUR SEAT BACK ON THE PLANE
This debate seems to never get old. Different people have different opinions about seat reclining and if it’s acceptable at all! But when you decide to recline your seat, you should do so very slowly while paying attention to the passenger behind you, otherwise, you risk sending their food or drink flying, crushing their electronic device, or scaring the heck out of them.
All it takes is one look over your shoulder, a gentle recline, and of course, an appreciation that the person behind you is a little less comfortable now.
5. YOU FAIL TO STOW YOUR CARRY-ON BAG PROPERLY
So what’s the best way to place a carry-on bag in the overhead bin? The longest side goes front to back. You can almost always do this except on the tiny planes. Also, it works well with the majority of bags unless you’re carrying something really unusual for flights, such as certain sports equipment or a guitar.
Another thing to remember, everyone on your flight will appreciate it if you don’t take up so much overhead space with your stylish hat, jacket, or blazer, and simply place it under the seat or on top of another bag instead.
6. YOU MAKE PHONE CALLS ON THE PLANE
I don’t know if you’ve already been on a flight with this type of people (or even worse, you are this type of people) but I have, more than a couple of times, and it’s terribly annoying. Once the plane lands, some fliers don’t only start talking loudly on their phones but also slow down the deboarding process.
No one actually cares about your important meeting or costly deal, but wasting other people’s time while bragging on the phone is totally unacceptable. Chatting while moving isn’t a difficult task after all.
7. YOU DON’T STICK TO YOUR ASSIGNED SPACE ON THE PLANE
This is one of the easiest ways to turn a nice flight into a nightmare for others. Invading their space, as well as their senses! This means you should never ever place your feet on the armrest, hog the armrest, listen to your favorite music without headphones (such a horrible nightmare), or bring strong-smelling foods on board.
Generally, don’t do anything that you wouldn’t want to deal with yourself. Have some mercy on your fellow passengers.
8. YOU KEEP GETTING UP TO GET STUFF FROM THE OVERHEAD BIN
Planning to enjoy a comfortable flight should be part of your packing list at home. Normally, you should place the items you need on board under the seat in front of you to avoid having to constantly reach for the bin.
Not only that, this way, you’ll also be at ease, you won’t keep disturbing other passengers, and you won’t block the way for the flight attendants. (Everyone is happy!)
9. YOU POSE FOR PHOTOS IN RISKY SPOTS
Many people are seriously annoyed by all the nutty, goofy things you do to fill your social media feeds. Well, no one is telling you not to have fun, but don’t risk your one and only life for a photo!
No one is willing to witness an awful tragedy just because you want to risk falling off a cliff for a picture that your friends will like and forget, even worse, you may end up showing everyone your very last photo in this world.
